Superalloys for aircraft turbines

Aircraft turbine blades operate under extreme heat. I am investigating how to heat-treat nickel superalloys to reduce segregation without initiating local melting.

Defining the question

Risk of incipient melting

Conditions to investigate

Conceptual outline of the research question.

How can solution treatment and homogenization conditions be selected? The investigation considers both insufficient treatment and the risk of incipient melting.

Structuring the method

I wrote and structured the initial proposal, which formally lists three students as authors. The proposed method combines equilibrium calculations, Scheil simulations and comparison of criteria.

Method and scope

Pandat/PanNi, PanPython and interpretable methods are part of the development scope. Maps, benchmark comparisons, models and experimental validation are planned outcomes.

Proposed method

  1. CALPHAD equilibrium

  2. Scheil simulations

  3. Comparison of criteria

Maps, models and validation

I currently conduct the investigation individually. The question and methodology are documented.

I structured the proposal and have been conducting the research since May 2026, connecting calculations, segregation and thermal criteria.

Maps, models and validation are planned; there is no calculated and validated treatment window to present yet.

What I am learning from the investigation

I am learning to turn a broad question into comparison criteria and a traceable method. Physical interpretation guides the data analysis and what still needs to be verified.
